Blackmagic Cloud Sync Features
In the world of sound design, Blackmagic Design is an oft-heard name. We’re talking about a leading company in the creation of video editing products, digital cinema cameras, color correctors, and various high-quality post-production tools for the film and television industry. The company has revolutionized the industry with innovations such as DeckLink capture cards, which have dramatically improved quality and affordability in post-production. Blackmagic Design continues to lead the market with technological advances such as 6G-SDI and 12G-SDI products, as well as stereoscopic 3D and Ultra HD workflows.
So, what do we have now? Blackmagic Cloud Sync, a tool that will ultimately become a trend: an innovative storage feature, aimed at transforming video editing and streaming workflows. This feature allows a camera to sync media directly into a DaVinci Resolve container while recording, making it possible for editors to access and work with media in real time. Within seconds, newly recorded media appears in the DaVinci Resolve bin, allowing editors and colorists to begin their work simultaneously with the recording.
The key to this live sync lies in the ability of Blackmagic’s latest cameras, such as Cinema Camera 6K, PYXIS, URSA Cine, and URSA Broadcast G2, to record full-resolution HD proxies in H.264 format. These files are synchronized in real-time with Blackmagic Cloud and then with all DaVinci Resolve workstations connected to the same project. This process is automatic, requiring only that the client log into Blackmagic Cloud and select a project before starting to record.
Furthermore, if multiple cameras are recording simultaneously, the multi-sync feature allows editors to see and choose the best angle from various views. This resembles live streaming within editing software, where media playback is continuous and updated in real-time, allowing editors to view and work with clip segments as they are recorded.
This functionality is especially valuable for news workflows, where historical events can be edited — and broadcast, by the way, almost instantaneously. The URSA Broadcast G2 camera, for example, can synchronize with the editing system as recording begins, allowing editors to prepare news segments in real time.
Blackmagic Cloud Live Sync will be available in public beta in mid-June as a free download for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K and Blackmagic URSA Broadcast G2 cameras. In addition, it is expected to be included in future updates for other Blackmagic cameras and in the Blackmagic Camera iPhone app. This update will be free to Blackmagic Cloud users at no additional cost, reaffirming Blackmagic Design’s commitment to innovation and accessibility in video production.
Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design, highlights the revolution this technology represents in industry workflows: “Live syncing media from our cameras directly to DaVinci Resolve containers is a revolution in workflow. This has never been possible before.
Blackmagic Cloud Live Sync will be available in public beta in mid-June as a free download for Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K and Blackmagic URSA Broadcast G2. Additional updates are planned for other cameras and the Blackmagic Camera iPhone app, at no additional cost to Blackmagic Cloud users. This new functionality promises to transform video editing and streaming processes, facilitating greater efficiency and collaboration in the film and television industry.
Blackmagic Design’s introduction of Blackmagic Cloud Live Sync marks a significant advance in video production and post-production workflows. This new feature enables real-time synchronization of media recorded by cameras such as the Cinema Camera 6K, PYXIS, URSA Cine, and URSA Broadcast G2, directly into DaVinci Resolve. This capability not only facilitates editing and color correction while the camera is still recording but also enables real-time collaboration between teams located in different parts of the world.
The impact of this technology is particularly notable in the realm of broadcast news and live production. The ability for editors to start working almost instantaneously with recorded media eliminates waiting time and speeds up the delivery of content to air. This not only improves efficiency but also opens up new creative possibilities by allowing real-time adjustments and corrections during shooting.
Nevertheless, it is important to consider the technical and logistical implications of this innovation. The reliance on a robust and stable Internet connection is crucial to ensure that live sync runs smoothly. In addition, while Blackmagic Cloud Live Sync offers seamless and automatic integration, the learning curve to maximize its potential could be challenging for some production and post-production teams.
Compared to similar solutions such as LiveU and AviWest, Blackmagic Cloud Live Sync is distinguished by its direct integration with DaVinci Resolve, one of the most widely used post-production tools in the industry. This integration can provide a significant advantage in terms of speed and efficiency for users already familiar with the Blackmagic Design ecosystem.
