We say the same thing over and over again: good images are the key to any film project but we should never underestimate the power of sound. Impressive images with bad sound will never produce a good result despite the opposite may well be true. Sound is fundamental, as is post-production audio. The iZotope tools are designed precisely to repair, edit and improve the sound. RX is software designed to fix typical sound problems, such as excessive ambient noise, pops, and crackles — the kind of problems you don’t want to hear as a director or viewer. iZotope, makers of a full suite of sound post-production tools, has begun revealing details about the tenth version of its flagship products. The company is offering a discount on current versions while they release new ones. That means now is a good time to buy a copy, as you can get a free upgrade to version 10.

So, let’s take a closer look at the impressive new features of the new RX.

The most striking thing about this update is that some of the new features included are relevant when it comes to expanding the capabilities of iZotope’s spectrum editing software. It’s worth noting that the RX10 comes in three different forms, depending on usage as well as the user’s budget: Advanced, Standard, and Elements. It is important to clarify that not all of the new features in this version will be included in all three products.

Perhaps the most notable new feature is text navigation. Basically, it consists of transcribing the dialogs contained in the edited audio file into written text. In addition to this one-click transcription, the text will be converted into fills that can be handled even at a word-level resolution when zoomed in sufficiently. This means you can select individual words as needed. In addition, the built-in search engine in the Text Navigation function panel also allows you to search for specific words in the audio file, performing smart word selection. Such features save dialogue editors and screenwriters a lot of time when working with files lasting more than half an hour or more, where previously they had to place markers manually or rely on their own memory — and, by the way, when you work after hours, memory is not so reliable. Text Navigation also features Multiple Speaker Detection, which allows you to distinguish between up to eight different speakers in an audio file and navigate between parts of each one of them.

On the other hand, the Repair Assistant plugin is another feature that will save you time and money, and, as the name suggests, its purpose is to repair defective audio. In a nutshell, it’s a new software with automatic audio analysis and repair features. In addition, the spectral recovery algorithm has been improved allowing you to get much more accurate and natural results when recovering lost frequencies in poor-quality recordings and audio files that are flawed for some reason during the recording process — if you are a sound mixer, maybe you know about this…

RX Restoration Assistant has been rewritten from the ground up, both the process chain and the interface, and now uses improved artificial intelligence algorithms to automatically detect audio issues, and, furthermore, it suggests and applies the most appropriate solutions in short. Best of all, not only does the plugin work well in automatic mode, but it also offers manual control of some parameters to customize them to the user’s liking, hence adding a human approach even to automated AI-based tasks, which, honestly, is much appreciated in times of process automation. There are also several selection modes depending on the material being processed, with options for vocals, musical instruments, percussion, and a plethora of sound effects. Of course, each of these modes offers optimized results for each type of audio, so it is highly recommended to choose the most appropriate one for each job. You don’t need to be an expert but it is vital to study a little bit about this topic.

In addition, thanks to this plugin, you can now quickly remove complex noise with cyclic pitch changes, such as electromagnetic interference, which often ruins the day for sound editors and mixers. By simply clicking the Adaptive Mode checkbox in the tool interface, the program will analyze and remove these annoying hums and unwanted noises. It works very well and will surely save you a lot of time and effort.

In short, there are only two disadvantages. The first one is that some of the new features are not fully debugged, and the second one is that the price is fair but not cheap. As for the advantages, on the one hand, the automatic dialog transcription is amazing, the Spectral Recovery is more accurate than the previous one, the repair wizard is much more useful, and it includes up to 19 independent plugins depending on the version.
