Let’s say you work in the editing world, or you’re a VFX artist, or you’re a colorist, and your job is to manage the post-production processes of movies, TV shows, and commercials. Let’s say you’re talented, but you’re just starting out, and you don’t have a big crew, or a crisis-proof budget, and you still have to pay the bills at the end of the month. You have the time, the knowledge, and the passion for your work, indeed, but you need a good tool to offer the best service to your clients. What to do? Well, if this is your case (and it’s great that you have reached this post!), what we suggest you do is give DaVinci Resolve a shot; perhaps, the best audio and video editing tool you can find right now, that you can even use at no cost. No joke.

That sounds too good to be true but it is. However, don’t forget this simple proviso: DaVinci’s learning curve is steep, and you’ll have to study. The good news is that once you’ve mastered the essential steps, you’re likely to have plenty of work afterward. Invest the time, it’s worth it. You need to have good ideas, equipment to match, and learn how to handle it, but, you do it, and there’s a long road ahead.

So, DaVinci Resolve 18.1 is a product of the notorious Blackmagic Design. This tool works on the basis of artificial intelligence processes. Actually, it is a program that has seven different modules that can let you do everything you need for the creation of ANY audiovisual project. The movie you want, the TV series you want, the commercial you want. Seriously: media, editing, color, audio mixing, and even delivery — all in one kit. Do you know how to do all this? Well, let’s get to work then: in one program you can edit the video, enhance its color, work on the sound, and deliver it to your client. It has a neural engine of automatic learning that raises the power of the program to unsuspected limits, meaning you are working only by yourself.

Usually, all these functions are performed by different software tools but DaVinci Resolve has made things much simpler, and this will definitely set a trend in the future. The whole production process will be much more streamlined, you will certainly save a lot of money, and quality will not be lost (if you know how to do a good job, that is). Now, if you want to take advantage of all the virtues of the program, and be even more effective, the best thing to do is to buy editing consoles, cameras, microphones, and so on, even if you do it little by little. This tool is good, but it doesn’t work miracles!

One of the great advantages of this software is that it works with modules. If you’re familiar with this industry, you’ll know why that’s quite positive: everything is done with a simple click. One of them is related to audio.

When it comes to it, the AI system it works with has a wonderful voice isolation feature that will allow you to remove loud and unwanted sounds quickly and easily, so that your voice recordings will be clean. When using this system on the cut, edit, and Fairlight pages, you will find that you can also isolate the dialog from background sounds after just a few clicks. You can remove all sound that interferes with what you need, no matter how loud and invasive it is. The voice will be completely isolated and you can enhance it as if you had recorded it in a studio, which will be useful for you in countless situations.

You will also find a dialog leveling system that processes and smooths dialog recordings without you having to manually adjust the level in the clip gain. You won’t even have to touch the automation curves (leave that to the software). It’s like magic.

And well, the last thing to add to this general review is what has been mentioned in the title of this post: DaVinci can be used freely. Of course, it is surprising that a program of such quality has an absolutely free version, but that’s the way it is. Just go to their website and download it. Remember that Blackmagic is famous for selling cameras, so if you buy one, they will let you work with the premium version (DaVinci Resolve Studio), which has many more features, such as teamwork, advanced noise reduction algorithms, and the ability to work with state-of-the-art HDR.

DaVinci Resolve is an excellent program for all those who are starting out and want the highest quality in their projects, although it is perfectly useful for specialized editors and mixers.
